Independence Day – Before the Vuelta and El Dorado: The Early History of Sport in Colombia

In the talk, Professor Matthew Brown looked at the early history of sports in Colombia and raised some questions about what has been remembered and commemorated, and why. There was football and cycling of course, and also horse racing, tejo and bullfighting.

It was followed by a Q&A session with renowned Colombian footballer Juan Pablo Ángel, and live music performed by Colombian singer, pianist and songwriter Luisa Santiago.

Matthew Brown is a Professor in Latin American History at the University of Bristol. His new book on the history of sports in South America will be published by Yale University Press next year. He is the author of From Frontiers to Football: An Alternative History of Latin America since 1800 (2014) and two books on the independence of Colombia. He is currently the principal investigator of the ‘Bringing Memories in from the Margins: Creative Methodologies, Inclusive Transitional Justice and Reconciliation in Colombia’ (2018-22), funded by the Newton Fund, UK Research + Investigation, and Minciencias ( Ministry of Science)

Juan Pablo Ángel is a retired Colombian footballer who played for the National Team, Selección Colombia, as well as various teams worldwide, such as Atlético Nacional (Colombia), River Plate ( Argentina), Aston Villa ( United Kingdom) , New York Red Bulls, LA Galaxy and Chivas USA ( United States). He is now involved in various business enterprises, is a TV Sports commentator and Consultant as well as brand Ambassador. He also participates in several charitable projects in the Americas and Europe.

Luisa Santiago is a Colombian-born, London-bred singer, songwriter and pianist who is well known for calling on the best of both worlds: her roots in Salsa and Latin music and a love of UK Soul and R&B. Luisa’s songwriting, piano playing and sweet vocals, honed at The Brit School and in the live arena, are generating both a growing fan base and media attention.
